“Arjen can fill in if he brings his football boots”

5 november 2021 – Arjen Robben will officially say goodbye to the FC Groningen audience against RKC Waalwijk on Sunday. And if it’s up to trainer Danny Buijs, he can also participate.

The 37-year-old former football player hung his football boots on the willows last summer. His comeback as a football player at ‘his’ FC Groningen did not turn out to be a success due to injuries. Yet his status in the Euroborg is unprecedented. “If Arjen brings his football boots on Sunday, I can also substitute for him in the last minutes”, Buijs joked during the press talk in the run-up to the duel with the Waalwijkers.

More tickets have now been sold for the duel with RKC than usual at home matches of the Groningen team. Most likely because of Robben’s farewell. Buijs: “And rightly so. If you see what Robben has done for the club, and hopefully will do in the future, he deserves a full Euroborg. He is a club icon. A combination of corona and the limited number of matches The fact that Arjen was able to play last season has meant that he has not been able to say goodbye to the supporters as a player on the field in front of full stands. It is therefore great that this can still be done in a different way on Sunday.”

Robben already stopped as a professional football player in 2019 after many successful years at the top of football. The Bedummenaar wore the shirt of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea, among others. In the Netherlands he also played for PSV in addition to FC Groningen.
