Alexander Nübel and FC Bayern Munich: It hasn’t been a love affair so far. As a substitute behind Manuel Neuer, the U21 vice-European champion from 2019 only lasted one season – before the 25-year-old finally forced a loan deal and has been on loan to the French first division club AS Monaco for two years since this summer. Nübel’s return to FC Bayern is currently planned for summer 2023 – or will it not work out? In an interview with the Kicker the former Schalke goalkeeper made a request to FC Bayern.

Nübel formulated a clear condition for a Bayern comeback: “What I can no longer imagine is coming back and not getting any more games,” the Monaco professional called for appearances at the record champions. If he then continues to be number two behind Manuel Neuer, who will be 37 years old in the summer of 2023, he would have “several models” in mind. In his first and so far only Bayern season, Nübel only made four competitive appearances.
Nübel is not thinking about an early return on loan. In theory, Bayern could bring him back after just one season. But Nübel does not believe in that: “I don’t see anything else and neither do FC Bayern.” In any case, the position as number two behind Neuer is currently occupied by Sven Ulreich, who gave up his regular keeper position at the second division club Hamburger SV in order to be the Neuer representative again after the Nübel loan.
For Nübel, however, things are going well in Monaco: The keeper has already made 20 competitive appearances under former Bayern coach Niko Kovac. While there is still room for improvement in the league with eleventh place, things are going well in the Europa League with currently first place in the group stage. Nübel is satisfied: “I play at a high level twice a week, that was my goal,” said the ex-junior international. “The statistics could look better, but I’m not dissatisfied.” Overall, the change was “the right decision”.
