The year of basketball in Soria

After its founding four seasons ago, the Soria Basketball Club lived a fateful year in which they could not add a single victory in the First National. When everything invited a negative view of the project, from the entity they knew that it was only the first stone of a house that would be sustained under the solid foundations of work and perseverance.

Now, even if it is anecdotal, they are the leaders of the league after the first two days played. They have gone from being a shy team to being a squad that is characterized by its high level of competition, “these guys fight every game and that attitude should make it possible for us to aspire to the maximum,” says Fernando Flores. The coach has achieved a united group that is now full of confidence.

Eight of their 10 players from last season continue and that union means that with hardly any training they have entered the league start launched.

Family. This season the Club Soria Baloncesto retains 80% of its staff, “we are practically the same as last year and that helps make the concepts clear from day one,” says Fernando Flores, “over the years this it’s getting easier and easier ”, and the two victories in two games without practically training corroborate this.

With just two weeks of training, the Soriano team made their league debut at Aldeamayor, “it is impressive that with only eight sessions they gave such a high level.” They won the game in a very tight final, “they showed that they had taken care of themselves during the summer because their physical level was very high in the last quarter.” They were superior.

A week later they passed over Venta de Baños winning by 27 points of difference, “it is our easiest game in four years”, and that says a lot, “all this makes it clear that we are going to be a difficult opponent for anyone”, a situation that now places them as the rival to beat.

Only the passing of the days will tell how far they can go, “if we are among the top five and we can fight for promotion to EBA, great but we have to focus on winning as many games as possible.” And they do it with a very defined style of play.

Identity. As usually happens every season, the Soria Basketball Club is not characterized by its strength or height, “it is still our greatest weakness, we lack tall people,” acknowledges the coach. For this reason, from the beginning of the project, it was clear to him how to play, “a fast basketball with very high pressure throughout the court to be able to run and score easy baskets.” The players have it memorized.

Rebounding is another story, “with our limitations we have no choice but to try to develop this game and fight what we can under the rim.” Some signs of identity that are now very clear, “we have established this way of approaching games in the lower categories so that when we have the juniors they adapt quickly.”

That is the example of Sergio García, “a great shooter who is still young but has settled very quickly in our system.” An inertia that is noticeable in that quarry, “we have gone from having five federated teams to 11”. Numbers that the first team is to blame for, “is the benchmark and if they see that we win and compete every game, it makes even more young people want to play here.”

It is the consolidation of the Soria Baloncesto Club, a long-term project that now achieves its first great sporting results. Added to this is the women’s team and a base that ensures the future of basketball, long forgotten in Soria.
