Jannik Sinner only needed 76 minutes on Sunday to win the fifth title of his career. 48 hours later he is already in action at the next tournament – and wants to break a special curse at this one.

World rankings. 11, five titles – and that at the age of only 20: only very few professionals can say this about themselves. Sinner can do that. His career has only just begun. Because the tennis business is extremely fast moving, successes can only be savored for a short time. And so the 20-year-old is already competing in the next tournament a few days after his success in Antwerp. This takes place in Vienna and the winner receives 500 points.

Sinner will intervene in the tournament on Wednesday when he starts with Reilly Opelka (ATP 25). The 2.11 meter tall American provides the blatant counterexample to the 1.70 meter tall Diego Schwartzman, who faced Sinner in the Antwerp final. In order to keep the hopes of participating in the ATP Finals alive, he has to come as far as possible in Vienna – and at the same time break a curse.

Odd statistics

Sinner has contested another tournament three times immediately after winning a title – he was never able to win more than one match. After triumphing at the Great Ocean Road Open, he lost in the first round of the Australian Open, with fatigue due to numerous marathon matches playing a major role at the time. At the Masters in Toronto he was also defeated at the start after he had previously lifted the trophy in Washington. Most recently in Indian Wells, a few days after successfully defending his title in Sofia, he survived one lap before the round of 16 ended. There is no reference value for the week after his first title in Bulgaria, as this was the last tournament in 2020.

Sinner is competing in Vienna for the third time, the balance sheet is balanced with two wins and two defeats. Last year he defeated Casper Ruud, his competitor this year for a place in the ATP finals, before he had to give up against Andrey Rubley.
