Schuermans and Claes held up in Cape Epic: “Incomprehensible that they don’t let us through” | mountain bike

The Cape Epic is a grueling 8-day mountain bike race for duos in South Africa. From the Belgian side we follow Olympian Jens Schuermans and Frans Claes with a magnifying glass.

In the prologue, the Belgian duo was presented with 20 kilometers with 600 vertical meters on the flanks of Table Mountain. The 4th place was the final result for Claes and Schuermans today, who conceded 2’07” on the winning tandem Sarrou-Beers.

“In the beginning we were able to pass four teams on the wide gravel roads”, Claes tells his story.

“But in the last descent it was singletrack all the time. We were then behind a slower team that didn’t want to let us pass. That’s a bit incomprehensible.”

“The slower team did not participate for the places of honor. It had taken them 3 seconds to wait and let us through. That is a shame.”
