Premier League: Premier clubs vote to block Newcastle sponsorship deals

Premier League clubs have reacted to the arrival of the new owners at Newcastle and they won’t make it easy. This past Monday they approved a standard for prevent them from signing sponsorship agreementsor, according to the newspaper The GuardianThe English clubs want to curb the ambitions of Saudi Yasir al-Rumayya.

In the emergency meeting to which the 20 teams that make up the Premier were summonedLee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, expressed his disagreement with the decision, as they considered the rule change, which temporarily ban trade deals involving pre-existing business relationships, is anti-competitive. Joining Charnley was also Amanda Staveley, the director and minority shareholder, who is now responsible for running the club on a day-to-day basis.

Despite Newcastle’s complaints the vote went ahead and the proposal was approved with 18 votes in favor and only Newcastle against. Manchester City abstained.

Many of the Premier League clubs are concerned that Newcastle’s Saudi owners could sign deals that could give them a head start when it comes to transferring. Clubs want preventive measures to be taken that prevent this or ensure that fair market value is paid. The rule will be in effect for the next month, and will apply to all 20 clubs, but many of them want something similar to be articulated on a permanent basis.

Following the Newcastle acquisition, the other 19 clubs demanded a special meeting with the Liga. That meeting took place last Tuesday. Immediately afterwards, the 19 clubs met on their own to discuss the financial implications of having the Saudes as competitors. It led to the draft of the temporary ban on transactions with related parties.
