As last year, the winners of the “Three Star Awards 2021” will be announced in two rounds – from October 14 to 25, Latvian sports professionals and sports journalists will be invited to nominate their candidates in each of the eleven nominations. In the second round, which will take place from November 8 to 28, there will be a referendum, in the framework of which every observer of sports life, sports journalists and athletes will determine the winners of the 2021 nominations with their vote.
Last year, cross-country skier Patrīcija Eiduka and boxer Mairis Briedis were recognized as the best Latvian athletes of the year. Spear thrower coach Valentīna Eiduka received the award for lifetime contribution.
Edgars Severs, Director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES), Deputy State Secretary, emphasizes: “This has been a challenging year for the Latvian sports community, which has brought unforgettable and positive emotions to each of us. And yet every industry needs a fuller involvement of the public in evaluating its work and success, which is why the new concept of honoring sports achievements – the “Three Star Award” introduced last year – not only involves sports professionals in nominating nominees, but also becomes increasingly open, democratic and inclusive by continuing to ensure public participation in the referendum and by taking a different approach to the composition of the jury. “
In accordance with the regulations of the “Three Star Award 2021”, the nominees (except for the nominations “Sports Teacher of the Year” and “Lifetime Contribution to Sports”) are nominated in the first round by a wide range of sports professionals: 94 sports federations (unions, unions and associations) ; Saeima Sports Subcommittee; Ministry of Education and Science; Board of the Latvian Sports Federation Council; Board of the Latvian Olympic Committee; Board of the Latvian Paralympic Committee; Board of Directors of Latvian Sports Education Institutions; Latvian Union of Local Governments Subcommittee on Sports; Management of the Latvian Academy of Sports Pedagogy; Board of the Latvian Team Sports Games Association; Latvian sports journalists.
“Three Star Award 2021” will be presented in 13 nominations – Breakthrough in Sport of the Year; Annual event in sports; Sports Federation of the Year; Sports Municipality of the Year; Sports coach of the year; Sports team of the year; Annual sports team in individual sports; Paralympic Athlete of the Year; Athlete of the Year in technical sports; Athletes of the Year; Athlete of the Year.
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia nominates and determines the winner of the nomination “Sports Teacher of the Year”, while the nomination “Lifetime contribution to sports” is determined by the Jury of Ceremonies, and its winner will be announced on December 6
LOK President Georges Tikmers comments on the award as follows: “Last year, our challenge was to create a new, democratic and clear approach to the annual sporting event with the active involvement of the whole society. We achieved this by receiving more than 250,000 votes in the referendum. This year we go a step further – excellence will be judged by excellence, because the jury includes representatives of various industries – opinion leaders and personalities who, with their example and active life position in their industry, can independently and objectively evaluate the achievements in sports. ”
This year, the jury consists of seven members, it is chaired by Sandis Riekstiņš, the head of the Saeima Sports Subcommittee, and it consists of six well-known representatives of various fields: Liene Dambiņa, Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Hospital Foundation; SIA “Madara Cosmetics” co-owner and manager Lotte Tīsenkopfa – Iltnere; cardiologist and LU professor Andrejs Ērglis; Rector of the Latvian Academy of Sports Pedagogy, Professor Juris Grants; film, theater and opera director, artistic director of Daile Theater Viesturs Kairišs; Maris Verpakovskis, the most productive player of the Latvian national football team of all time.
The task of the sports “Three Star Awards 2021” jury is to summarize and approve the voting results, to nominate and approve the nomination “Lifetime investment in sport” and to authorize the results of the MES sports teacher competition.
The event celebrating the achievements of the sports society “Three Star Award 2021” is organized by the Latvian Olympic Committee with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia. “Three Star Award 2021” partners are JSC “Latvijas valsts meži”, food and non-food retail network “Rimi Latvia”, JSC “LNK Industries” and fuel trade service provider “Circle K Latvia”, as well as LOK information partners – SIA “ Publishing house “Rīgas Viļņi”, SIA “Visual Media”, AS “Radio SWH” and “TV3 Group”.
