NFL: bonuses to the “Rooney rule” to increase diversity and fairness

The National Football League has made policy changes related to the “Rooney Rule” to increase diversity, fairness and inclusion in hiring practices.

The rule has been enhanced to require teams to interview at least two candidates from visible minorities and from outside the organization for the role of general manager / manager responsible for football operations, and for all coordinator positions.

Previously, the requirement was limited to a single interview of a candidate from visible minorities and from outside an organization for these same functions.

These new requirements were already in effect for openings for head coach positions.

NFL clubs are now required to conduct an in-person interview with at least one external visible minority candidate for any openings for a head coach or general manager position.

Candidates for Coordinator or Deputy Director General positions can be interviewed virtually. However, face-to-face interviews are encouraged.
