Luis Suárez: ‘Gesture phone call was not intended for Ronald Koeman’ | Football

The Uruguayan put his hand over his ear and pretended to be on the phone. Spanish media suggested it was a reference to Suarez’s phone call from Koeman last year saying there was no more place for him at Barcelona.

“It was not intended for Koeman, certainly not,” said Suárez on Spanish TV after the league win at his old club (2-0). “It was just to let certain people know that I still have the same phone and number. I didn’t celebrate my goal too much, out of respect for Barcelona. I still feel a lot of love for my former teammates. They are in a difficult period. It’s special to beat Barcelona now. I feel 100 percent part of Atlético and I’m happy with this result.”

The former player of FC Groningen and Ajax, among others, gave the assist in Madrid for the opening goal of Thomas Lemar. Shortly before halftime, the roles were reversed. On a pass from the Frenchman, Suárez scored the 2-0. It marked the 34-year-old striker’s fourth goal this season in La Liga.
