In 2021, it will be worldwide news that an active professional is coming out as gay. Josh Cavallo is the only one who dares to play football. It’s time to break free from the game.
“We are in the year 2021! Everyone should be allowed to love whoever they want to love ”. A sentence that sounds almost banal. Why shouldn’t everyone be allowed to love how and whom they want? The sentence comes from six football players from the team council of Hannover 96 – at the beginning of this year. Like 800 other footballers, they pledged their solidarity to anyone who came out in the magazine 11 Freunde.
Now a professional soccer player is actually coming out, but not in Germany. “I’m a footballer and I’m gay,” wrote midfielder Josh Cavallo on social media on Wednesday. Cavallo plays for Adelaide United in the Australian A-League. He didn’t want to hide anymore, that’s the end of the double life. A life determined by fear and the feeling of not being able to be who he is all the time. He is currently the only male professional footballer in the world who acknowledges his homosexuality.
