Indonesia Can’t Raise the Red and White Flag at the Thomas Cup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Indonesia certainly cannot fly the red and white flag in Indonesia Thomas Cup and instead a flag with the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) logo that will be flown.

In the Thomas Cup event, four semifinalist countries will attend the closing ceremony and each country’s flag will be flown.

Indonesia has successfully entered the semifinals of the Thomas Cup and that means Indonesia will be present until the closing ceremony.

However, for the 2020 Thomas Cup, Indonesia will not be able to fly the Red and White flag.

“The information I got from the Head of Foreign Affairs of PP PBSI, Bambang Roedyanto, the information is like that. So there is no Red and White flag but the PBSI logo has been replaced,” said Head of Public Relations and Media of PBSI, Broto Happy to CNN Indonesia.

Bambang Roedyanto himself told CNN Indonesia that he had been contacted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) regarding the ban on the use of the Red and White flag and the use of a flag with the PBSI logo as its replacement.

The ban on raising the red and white flag is related to problems with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA). WADA said Indonesia did not comply with the doping test program.

On September 15, WADA sent a letter to the Indonesian Anti-Doping Agency (LADI) regarding non-compliance with the doping test program.

Indonesia cannot fulfill the 2020 doping plan (TDP) and also has not met the TDP for 2021.

A number of countries were sent letters and had 21 days to provide clarification. Indonesia did not provide clarification, as did Thailand and North Korea. WADA then sent a letter threatening sanctions on 7 October.

Menpora Zainudin Amali even admitted that he only found out about this case on October 8. The Minister of Youth and Sports said that the change in the management structure of LADI was one of the reasons why Indonesia was late in providing clarification.

The Minister of Youth and Sports himself said that he had sent a letter so that Indonesia would not be sanctioned.

“We have sent a letter to WADA. So we are trying to do this well. Hopefully with an explanation from us there can be further talks,” Amali said on October 8.

Indonesia is currently preparing to face Denmark in the Thomas Cup semifinal duel, Saturday (16/10).
