Four pedestrians had to be taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a collision with a car in Sint-Amandsberg. Two of the victims were children. Two adults and two children were hit by a car around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. This happened on the corner of the Visitatiestraat and the Grondwetlaan. Christine Vanmeenen lives near the intersection and rushed to the rescue.

“I was working inside and heard someone yell. It’s not the first time this has happened, and I immediately thought of an accident again. Because I followed a first aid training, I quickly walked out.”

The victims were taken to hospital with injuries. All four are not in mortal danger. The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation. “It was a grandmother, a mother, a two-year-old and a baby,” says Vanmeenen.

“They crossed the zebra crossing when it was green for them, and the car that hit them also had a green light. I gave them primary care, reassured them and waited for the ambulance to arrive.”

Not the first time

An accident happened at the same intersection last week. A cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a car. A few years ago, a 75-year-old cyclist even died when he was hit by a truck that turned right.

“Accidents happen almost every day,” says Vanmeenen. “It’s already a pretty dangerous intersection. Now it is even busier, because traffic drives past here to avoid the works on Dampoort and Neuseplein. Do something about it, that is the question from the neighbourhood.”

Mobility ships Filip Watteeuw (Green) confirms that this is a difficult intersection that is on the list to be tackled. “The intersection will be completely redesigned, but that always takes some time. In the short term, I have therefore given the order to take measures so that it becomes safer in the meantime.”
