FC Bayern – Rummenigge mediated: Who Hoeneß has reconciled with – Bundesliga

Reconciliation between two old Bayern stars!

As Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (66) explained on Wednesday evening, Uli Hoeneß (69) has reconciled with an old colleague after years of radio silence. And through his mediation!

“Strangely enough, now that I have quit, I have a really good relationship with Uli,” revealed Rummenigge at the award ceremony for the German Football Ambassador initiative in Berlin. “I even recently managed to bend the relationship between Uli Hoeneß and Paul Breitner so that the two of them hugged at the end of our conversation.”

In June, Rummenigge handed over his position as Bavaria’s CEO to Oliver Kahn – six months earlier than planned. Between him and club boss Hoeneß there had been increasing differences of opinion at the end of their time together at the top of the record champions.

Much more complicated, however, were the tensions between Hoeneß and Breitner: Both of them met as players at FC Bayern. A friendship developed. They were also together in the national team, including the 1974 world championship title.

It wasn’t until years after Hoeneß had to end his career early and switched to management at Bayern that it banged. But also right away! When Hoeneß gave a cabin sermon on Bavaria’s trip to Southeast Asia in 1983, Breitner slammed the manager “You have nothing to say here” on the head and his shoes in front of his feet. Hoeneß was furious. Shortly thereafter, Breitner provoked a red card in the late autumn of his active career. His comment: “That’s right! The red card was a symbol. Now it’s finally over! ”The end of his great time at Bavaria. And an ego trip that Hoeneß did not forgive him for many years.

It wasn’t until 2007 after a chance meeting at the airport that they drew a line – but only for the time being! Breitner became a kind of club representative at Bavaria. But the tiniest sparks always led directly to major fires: Hoeneß followed Breitner with a verbal battle on TV with Rummenigge. In 2018, Breitner explained in BILD that he had returned his tickets in the grandstand of the Munich arena because of a quarrel with Hoeneß.

For the time being, the last act in the ongoing dispute between the two alpha types was delivered verbally. The then Bayern boss Hoeneß in no uncertain terms: “I broke with Paul Breitner when I got out of prison – and that was it for me.” And Breitner: “The story with Uli was over for many years.” Until now!

Mediator Rummenigge is now even hoping for a continuation of the peace process: During a visit with him to club legend Franz Beckenbauer (76). “He would also be happy if all three of them stood in front of his door and then had a coffee, lunch or whatever.”
