No, at SportClub we did not go crazy. We turned pink: from our logo on the networks to our attitude. Because October is the month chosen by the WHO to raise awareness about breast cancer. In fact, Tuesday 19 is World Day to fight breast cancer and, with the help of the Breast Cancer Aid Movement (MACMA) and, together with the Estée Lauder Companies, we organize a series of activities for partners and associates, to raise awareness of the importance of early detection and breast self-examination to save lives.
The statistics are shocking: every 15 seconds, somewhere in the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. In Argentina, it represents 31.8% of all cancers among women (21,000 cases per year). Although, detected early, it is 100% curable. And for that, getting checked is key.
The medical community suggests self-awareness of your breasts: Once a month, you should check yourself and be attentive to certain indicators, such as the presence of a nodule or lump; or a swelling that occurs in the breasts on a constant basis; rough skin; changes in breast and / or nipple size, or bleeding through the nipple. If any of these situations arise, a specialist should be consulted. And beware, that 1% also affects men.
And from the age of 40 – if there is a family history, at an earlier age – it is important to have a mammogram annually., a study that can detect breast cancer when the nodule is not yet palpable, or is minimally so. In these cases, it is possible to resort to less aggressive treatments than those carried out when the disease is more advanced. It is always important to visit your doctor, since breast cancer may not present symptoms or cause pain.
Awareness campaign
For the next two weeks, SportClub organized two activities for members. The first is a special yoga class, where pink ribbons will be given to those who participate and there will be raffles. This event, which has already taken place at the Paraguay headquarters (Paraguay 2060) and at the Belgrano headquarters (Moldes 1970), will take place today at 10 in Belgrano Plaza (Echeverría 3234); It will repeat tomorrow at 10 in Libertador (Av. Del Libertador 7395), and will close in Unicenter (Paraná 3745, Martínez), on Tuesday 19, at 20.
Meanwhile, from 18 to 25, there will be a talk on prevention and awareness about breast cancer. Always at 17, schedule: Monday 18, Unicenter; Wednesday 20, Belgrano Plaza; Thursday 21, Paraguay; Friday 22, Belgrano, and Monday 25, Libertador.
