Van der Vaart, who worked with Van Gaal at Orange in the past, has nothing to criticize in the way the coach talks about football in the media. “He always has a good story, so I understand that as a journalist you are always on the lookout. But it’s also great to have an argument with him.”
FC Twente coach Ron Jans was someone who dared to go against Van Gaal and clashed with him several times in the Eredivisie. “You are good at listing the opportunities,” Van Gaal once admitted to him in 2007. Jans countered: “And you in belittling your colleagues.”
No resentment at Jans
Fourteen years later, Jans can laugh about it. He also enjoyed the press conferences at Orange. “I have now seen four and they are all different. In the first he was very open and also vulnerable. And when things went well with the Orange, we also heard it back (in terms of tone).”
There is no question of resentment about the past with Jans. “It went a little less between us for a year, but I think he is a very inspiring trainer. He really listens to the players and the staff and does something with it. I think that’s great.”
