Cuba: When half the baseball team flees after the tournament – politics

from Christoph Gurk, Buenos Aires

By Monday at the latest, the full extent of the disaster was clear. It was early morning when a plane landed in Havana with the Cuban baseball team at the beginning of the week. In Mexico she took part in the U23 World Cup, but instead of a win she only brought home a disappointing fourth place. And as if that wasn’t bad enough – half of the team was still missing: Twelve players out of 24 should not have come back to the island. Most likely they have set off from Mexico in the direction of the USA, lured by the dream of a lucrative contract in the Major League MLB or at least driven by the desire for a slightly better life with the imperialist class enemy.
