Bundesliga: Admira fights for a draw at Austria

Admira remains in the table as fifth for the time being, one point ahead of the eighth-placed Viennese. Austria is only two points short of third Austria Klagenfurt after the first half of the league round.

At Austria there is also work behind the scenes. The club has until Wednesday to submit the annual financial statements or a liquidity report to the league. The Viennese were granted a grace period. As board member Gerhard Krisch emphasized, they are “working flat out to submit the required documents to the league”. Krisch also confirmed that talks with potential investors have resumed.

Admira gets off to a perfect start

At the Austria-Elf from trainer Manfred Schmid a new young face could be seen once again. Since captain Markus Suttner was out due to muscle problems, Ziad El Sheiwi came to his first job with the professionals. At 17 years and 219 days, the left-back became the youngest player in an Austria starting XI in Bundesliga history (since 1974).

Admira coach Andreas Herzog, who had spoken of a “trend-setting game” for both teams, did not offer any surprises in the absence of the injured Luca Kronberger and Sebastian Bauer. Admira was the more experienced and well-rehearsed team. After initial efforts to attack, the Südstadters promptly struck. Marlon Mustapha found Ganda, who pulled past El Sheiwi and Braunöder to the middle and defeated Patrick Pentz with a low shot (13th).

Much struggle, little danger

Austria, whose organized fan scene was quieter in the stadium due to the 2G regulation in force in Vienna, managed to compensate for their first dangerous action more or less immediately. Admira goal scorer Ganda lost the ball in distress, Braunöder brought Djuricin into play and Teigl deliberately steered his ideal cross into the goal (18th).

A little later Ganda had to leave the field injured after a duel with Eric Martel. Both teams continued to show a lot of commitment, but little risk of goals. It wasn’t until the final minutes of the first half of the game that it was tough again. Roman Kerschbaum acted too unselfishly in the Austria penalty area (42nd), on the other side Lukas Mühl shot over the goal from a corner (45th + 3).

Austria leadership does not hold up either

The first scenes after changing sides then belonged to Austria. El Sheiwi just missed his debut goal in the league with a half volley (47th), Braunöder then tried unsuccessfully with his heel (53rd). The home side acted more powerfully to the taste of their supporters, the Admira had problems. Schmid finally brought Ohio for Muharem Huskovic – a swap that paid off less than a minute later. The 18-year-old Englishman immediately put on a solo and finally escaped Admira’s defense after the following Braunöder flank.

In a parallel to the first half, this lead did not last long either. Pentz saved his eleven with a save before the 2: 2, but the substitute Patrick was there after the preparatory work of the strong Mustapha. Both Austria and Admira did not seem satisfied with the division of points. Martel was the closest to the fifth goal with his head (85th).

Voices for the game:

Manfred Schmid (Austria-Trainer): “In the first half Admira got into the game better, the first quarter of an hour was not good of us. We got a stupid goal, but reacted well. In the second half we got out of the locker room well. We do a nice one Goal, but then again not attacking exactly enough, making mistakes, so you can’t win, the home win was possible.

Basically, however, I’m not dissatisfied with the team’s performance. The boys make mistakes, it is the experience that they lack. You can’t train them. I think the fans like our way, even if one or the other is disappointed with the final whistle. “

Andreas Herzog (Admira trainer): “We got into the game very well and scored a nice goal. Immediately after our leadership, however, we made one or two unnecessary mistakes and thus got the compensation. Due to the injuries of Ganda and Starkl, Austria got better into the game. We then changed the system, but Austria set the tone and deservedly took the lead. But it was an important signal from the team that they haven’t given up and still fought for the point. We are very satisfied with the draw. “
