Paula Badosa announced on Monday afternoon that she will be out of the 2021 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, in which Spain was presented as a clear favorite with her and Garbiñe Muguruza as top figures. Finally, both will leave Prague aside to focus on the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, which will be played from November 10 to 16.
Sad news for the Spanish Billie Jean King Cup team and their aspirations to lift the title at the 2021 Prague Finals. Paula Badosa will not be among the warriors. The player has prioritized her first participation in a WTA Finals. Also this tournament will be on the other side of the pond; in Guadalajara (Mexico), from 10 to 17 November.
The Spanish saw her access to Guadalajara made official last Sunday, when the drop of Ons Jabeur for the next WTA in Cluj-Napoca 2. The Tunisian needed to win to overtake Badosa (although not necessarily to qualify, she just wouldn’t do it to get Anett Kontaveit a predictably difficult title in Romania).
Bolsava and Masarova, waiting for Medina’s call
After confirming both the resignation of Paula Badosa and that of Garbiñe Muguruza for the 2021 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, the Spanish team has, provisionally, only three members: Sara Sorribes, Nuria Párrizas and Carla Suarez Navarro; condition that forces the captain Anabel Medina to find two substitutes for Badosa and Muguruza.
Everything suggests that Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova they will be chosen by Medina. Both are two of the next Spanish classifieds in the WTA ranking, and they have some experience (especially Bolsava) playing Federation Cup or Billie Jean King Cup. These Finals will also be a brilliant opportunity for Nuria Párrizas to consecrate her extraordinary 2021, trying help Spain, as second singlist, to lift a title that has become, with the two last minute casualties, quite difficult for the Iberians.
