Badminton men’s doubles Ko Seong-hyeon and Shin Baek-cheol (Incheon International Airport, 27th in the world) made a surprise defeating the world’s second-ranked Mohamed Asan-Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) and advanced to the semi-finals of the French Open Championship.
Ko Seong-hyeon and Shin Baek-cheol defeated Mohamed Asan and Hendra Setiawan 2-1 in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the World Badminton Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 750 French Open held in Paris, France on the 29th (local time).
Ko Seong-hyeon and Shin Baek-cheol could not overcome the initial tension and gave up the first set 16-21. However, after winning the second set 21-19 after a close match, they won the third set 21-13 as well.
Ko Seong-hyeon and Shin Baek-cheol, who retired from the national team in 2016, have since participated in international competitions as individuals. Go-Shin played an active part in the world-class doubles team, winning the men’s doubles gold medal at the 2014 World Individual Championships around their neck.
Women’s singles Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance), who lost the championship due to a thigh injury in the final of the Badminton Danish Open Championship, also defeated Yeo An-min (Taiwan) 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) in the quarterfinals and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Men’s singles Heo Gwang-hee (Samsung Life Insurance), who advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the world’s 2nd and 10th players in a row, also continued his momentum by winning 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) over Raksha Sen (India).
Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan (Incheon International Airport above) and Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank), who participated in the women’s doubles quarterfinals, also won victories.
