Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer retires at 34

He has stored his big forehand strike, his one-handed backhand and some nice memories at the bottom of the bag. Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer decided to leave the professional scene and the ATP circuit on Thursday after 18 seasons at the highest level. At 34, the former 21st in the world at his best ranking in 2015 is now a very young retiree. Tennis has given me a lot of joy, it has been part of my life since I was young. I feel that now is the time to close this wonderful chapter as a player ”, he expressed on his Twitter account.

Puzzled by injuries in recent years, Mayer was ranked 283rd in the world and had only taken part in one final draw on the circuit this year (first round loss in Santiago, Chile). His highlights will remain his two career titles, in Hamburg (ATP 500) in 2014 and 2017 and his Davis Cup victory with Argentina in 2016.
