After three defeats in a row – Mainz 05 shoots FC Augsburg

Bo Svensson has been a trainer in Mainz since January of this year. So far, he has hardly known bad phases. But in the past few weeks there has been a slight crisis. That ended on Friday.

The dynamic and haunted FSV Mainz 05 is back. On Friday, the “zero fives” dominated FC Augsburg and shot their frustration off their hearts in the 4-1 victory and made the three defeats forgotten at the end of the day.

The match winner was U21 captain Jonathan Burkardt, who scored twice (26th, 71st). The other Mainz goals were scored by Karim Onisiwo (10th) and Stefan Bell (15th). Andi Zeqiri scored for Augsburg at 1: 3 (69th).

That’s how the game went

In a lively initial phase, in front of 19,400 spectators, it was the hosts who set the tone and Burkardt (2nd) gave them the first good opportunity. But Rafal Gikiewicz in the FCA goal parried strongly. Just eight minutes later, however, Robert Gumny presented Onisiwo with the opening goal on a silver platter with a nasty air hole.

The Augsburgers got no access at all against extremely snappy and quick-thinking Mainz, and nothing changed after Bell’s second goal.

The 05er could do whatever they wanted in the build-up of the game, the erratic and weak guests hardly offered any serious resistance and could not complain about the 0: 3 by U21 national player Burkardt.

The strong Onisiwo (35th) and Burkardt (40th) missed further top-class opportunities. After the break, Augsburg was able to record a few longer ball possession phases – also because Mainz slowed down a bit. There was also a good chance from Ruben Vargas (57th).

Although the FCA still lacked the bite, the substitute Zeqiri even managed to hit the consolation goal. But in return, Burkardt crowned his outstanding performance.
