US Open – Alexander Zverev pissed off about the video screen – but what exactly is the problem

“That big screen behind the court shows a close-up of the shoe, the racket, the ball, but the shot is always late,” explained Alexander Zverev in an exclusive interview at Eurosport.

The better the opponent serves, the bigger the problem becomes. With Lloyd Harris, Zverev faced an accomplished server in the quarter-finals – and got into difficulties accordingly.

“When he throws the ball up, you can still see the close-up, which then suddenly becomes smaller. The ball then just disappears,” explained the man from Hamburg.

The tournament organizer is not new to the players’ displeasure, on the contrary: Zverev had already complained during his third-round game against Jack Sock.

That’s why Zverev complained about the screen in the stadium

“Every time a point begins, they zoom in on a person in the audience,” the world number four had complained to chair referee Carlors Bernardes.

“The stadium control is simply too slow with the re-editing. It is counterproductive if nobody is allowed to move in the stands, but a fan is shown jumping around on the big screen,” said Eurosport commentator Wolfgang Nadvornik, analyzing the situation.

“What’s this?” Videowall brings Zverev back on the palm

Only: nothing has changed since then.

Zverev calls on the chair referee to act

And so Zverev spoke vehemently to chair referee Louise Azemar-Engzell in the quarter-finals to provide a remedy. The Swede also picked up the phone and passed on the complaint.

The exciting question is now: Will it work at least in the semifinals to modify the video screen in a player-friendly way?
