“Trash talk is an art”

When we think of the best trash talkers in history, we inevitably think of Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and Gary Payton. The latter destabilized their opponents with their trash talk, constantly talking on the floors. The Glove, guest of Baron Davis on the Point God show, revealed his routine to be reassembled before each game.

“Trash talk is an art. I used to pick up my car at 4 p.m. because you had to be in the gym at 5:30 p.m. And guess what I was putting on for music? I put Too $ hort, E-40 and Ice Cube. These are the 3 I listened to all the time, I listened to them all day. So on the road I got in the mood. Then I was like, ‘Who am I playing tonight? I’ll give him a beating. I swear, I’m going to give it a hard time. ‘ And if it was a youngster, I was going to screw him up. You know what I mean ? Then when I got to the room, I had a Big Mac, some fries, 6 McNuggets and a strawberry milkshake. And I ate it all. And if I had a stomach ache, I was going to kick his ass some more because now I was angry. You know what I mean. I was trying to motivate myself for what I was going to do, and I did that every game. I did this every game! Even outside. I had a ball boy who was going to get me a Big Mac, fries, 6 McNuggets and a strawberry milkshake. I would do this every time, then go to the hot tub and eat in it. And I was on my Two-Way Pagger. And I sent messages to all my friends and I told them that I was going to give our opponent a bad night, that I was going to plant 30 points. I was there: ‘you want to bet a drink? I’ll bet a drink on that! ‘ That’s how I worked and that’s how I motivated myself. ” Gary Payton
