After the disappointing performance of last Sunday in Piedmont, it would be easy to abandon oneself to the despair typical of great missed opportunities: that made up of regrets, remorse and above all hunts for the guilty who have the sole effect of burying the morale of the troop definitively and destroying what is good done in the last two years.
We are talking about two years not by chance, because some ghosts of the tragicomic day in Verona last season were seen wandering, at the end of race 2, on the diamond of Fossano and between the seats of the bus during the return journey: that feeling of having thrown to the nettles the efforts of a whole year, from the winter races in Via Gruara and the first “icy” swings in January to the devastating transfers with an alarm clock at 4 am, with training, sweat, physical ailments and injuries in between.
Just as after the events in Verona our boys were able to get up and, however it ends, stage a SPECTACULAR 2021 season (the two historical consecutive no-hits could be enough to define it as such), the strength of the magnificent group that has united under the white-blue jacket he has undoubtedly already chased away all evil spirits, better than a Hollywood ghostbuster. It was enough to be present at the camp during the week to realize it.
This does not mean, however, that in the four races that remain to be played from today, our boys will take the field only to “honor the championship”: on the contrary, since nothing has yet been decided and to prove themselves (and to the opponents) that ours is not the team seen seven days ago, the guys of manager Marchi are already called against Piacenza to give a signal of reaction. The opponent is a tough formation, as also demonstrated by the result of the first leg, complete in all departments and, just like the Fossano, without pressures related to ranking positioning. Nonetheless, the only result that would allow us to keep the flicker of hope alight is a double victory.
Even more than victory, however, it will be essential to bring the true nature of our baseball into play, to express our game as it has been done throughout the year and to field our X factor, our extra man: the splendid group that has come to be created and that includes all the insiders, from the managers to the technical staff, from the “historical group” to the new arrivals. Only in this way will we be able to avoid the return of certain ghosts and, as things go, sleep peacefully.
