“The parties are defined in the areas” – Diario El Ciudadano y la Región

“The parties are defined in the areas. We had 7 extra situations to the goal that we did not know how to take advantage of or their goalkeeper appeared. We have to do everything necessary to be up to par every weekend and win the game. ” Fernando Gamboa’s post-match words could sound like an excuse, although they are far from it. Without having time to replay the game, only with the impression of what happened, the DT tried to highlight a decisive aspect when losing to Atlético Tucumán: the efficiency in the rival goal.

Not all games are explained from arrivals to the rival area, or rather, to shots or goal chances. But the famous “ping pong” is often a reflection of what happened on the playing field. And against the Dean, Newell’s was clearly superior in this aspect (14 shots against 8), as well as in possession (68 to 32).

In soccer there is an unchangeable, decisive rule, and that is where Newell’s lost. The one who scores the most goals wins, simple and straightforward. And that’s where Gamboa exposes his anger. “What we have to do is simple, be more men and start converting the situations we have in each game”; Shooting.

As an example, of the 14 shots on goal that Newell’s had, 7 went to the three sticks, and only one was a goal by Nacho Scocco, while the other six were saved by Luchetti, and another similar amount were deflected.

It could be said that the rival goalkeeper was a figure, and the reality is that he was not bad. But of the six saves, the greatest merit was being well stopped. Newell’s players had clear chances to score, but they seemed to always aim for the goalkeeper or miss the goal, except for Nacho’s goal.

That is where Gamboa’s anger goes, because of those chances like Castro’s in the first half, who with all the arc at his disposal gave him down and in the middle, where Luchetti turned to at least cover as much as he could.

Statistics support Gamboa. In these first 9 games, Leprosy finished 92 times, at an average of 10 shots per game. His efficiency hitting the goal was 45%, not bad, but he only scored 10 goals (1.11 per game) which brings his percentage of effectiveness to just 10%.

Obviously each game is different. At home, Newell’s attacks more, and consequently shoots more on goal (12.2 shots per game). With Estudiantes he was highly effective, as he had 9 shots, of which four were on target and all of them ended up in the net. With Talleres, which also celebrated quadrupled, there were more shots (14) and on goal there were 9, three goals and a crossbar. And with the tucumanos, with the same amount of shots (14), he only scored one goal.

Another point to take into account is who finishes the goal. And there, too, Gamboa must draw conclusions to seek corrections.

Those who finished the most in these first nine dates are Ignacio Scocco and Cristian Lema, with 13 shots. Obviously the conditions are different. Nacho has 3 goals from six shots on goal; Lema, who generates head, could barely connect 4 times between the three sticks and 9 times his shot was deflected (he has not celebrated yet).

Another who finishes a lot is Nico Castro, with 11 shots. He has three goals and is quite efficient at hitting the goal (9 shots), although he made the rival goalkeepers look a lot.

Compagnucci (7) surprised in fourth place, while forwards like Giani (6), Garro (6), Cristaldo (5) and Sordo (5) did not have as many shots on goal. Sabbag, with a few minutes, adds 3 shots. And not to mention Comba, who in three games has not yet added one.

The truth is that there is a feeling / reality that Newell’s lowered its offensive production – especially on the road – and it is also less effective. He has not yet converted outside of Coloso, where at least he always scores, but as Gamboa interprets, there are players who need to have more conviction when looking for the goal. Because beyond tactical corrections in defense and midfield; of the search to be a protagonist; or of the character that the team may have, if it does not score goals, it will not be able to win.
