Shock at Paralympics: tennis ace collapsed after heart problems

The Belgian team at the Paralympics in Tokyo is in shock: As the Paralympic Committee of Belgium announced, wheelchair tennis player Joachim Gerard passed out on Wednesday evening in the athletes’ village. He was taken to the emergency room, regained consciousness, and is responsive. Initial examinations therefore indicate a heart problem, further examinations are to follow.

Gerard, 32, developed polio at the age of ten months. He is a former world number one, won gold at the Paralympics in Rio in 2016 and won the Grand Slam tournaments in Australia and Wimbledon this year.
