Sergio “Oveja” Hernández made official this Friday his departure as coach of the Argentine basketball team, from which he is leaving with several records on his back and one month after the Albiceleste participation in the Tokyo Olympic Games.
“I go away happy and calm. A stage has been completed and I feel that a new coach must start another. I enjoyed it a lot but it’s time for a new process to start. I don’t have so many reasons to leave the National Team, but my career has always had the intuition of when to stop and start something new, “said” Oveja “in statements released by the press area of the Argentine Basketball Confederation (CAB).
“This is not traumatic at all because here the important thing is the National Team, it’s not me. And the National Team belongs to no one but everyone. Luckily we have very good coaches and I will be at the disposal of whoever arrives, so that the successor have the tools and a base from which to start ”, added who was the last season directing in Spanish basketball.
Hernández directed three World Cups (4th place in 2006, 5th in 2010 and runner-up in 2019) and is the second-highest winner in the tournament’s history (record of 21 wins and 5 losses), behind American Mike Krzyzewski. As for the Olympic events, he was in Beijing 2008 (bronze medal), Rio 2016 (8th) and Tokyo 2020/2021 (8th).
He also leaves office with the largest number of official matches in the history of the National Team (116) and a mark of 84 won and 32 lost.
For his part, Fabián Borro, president of the CAB, said: “Sergio’s departure is a see you later and not a final goodbye. These coaches that we have had in this virtuous Argentine basketball circuit, which Horacio Muratore started more than 25 years ago, will always be linked and close to the CAB, along with the players, professionals and leaders, because the National Team is above everybody”.
