On the occasion of the commemoration of the Vía de la Plata Route Day, which is celebrated next Saturday, the City Council of Zamora has organized different activities related to this historical and cultural route that has been running from south to north for two thousand years. the western peninsula. The celebration of the Vía de la Plata Day has been institutionalized by the Network of Cooperation of Cities in the Ruta de la Plata in commemoration of the date of birth of the emperor Trajan, on September 18, AD 53 in Itálica (Seville) , who was one of the emperors who shaped the old Roman road in its final form, providing it with the necessary infrastructure throughout its journey.

With the programming for next Saturday, the thematic activities on Ancient Rome, culture and Roman history organized by the City Council culminate, among which the first Roman market held in the city and an exhibition in the olive groves, called ‘Iter Romanum ‘, which is part of a project of the’ Cooperation Network of Cities of the Via de la Plata Route ‘to create a European cultural itinerary with the theme of the cultural heritage of Rome.

The activities scheduled for this Saturday will have the collaboration of the Ethnographic Museum, with an open day, and the Museum of Zamora, with two guided visits, at 12:30 and 17:30, under the name ‘All roads lead to Rome ‘and a family workshop at 11:00 called’ What are the Romans coming? There will also be activities in the street with an exhibition of Villar Romano, at 18:30 in the San Martín Park, and numerous activities in the Plaza de Viriato from 11:00 hours, with various workshops on different themes, such as gladiators, Roman writing, mosaics or cave paintings, a children’s space with a flying dragon and Roman musical structures, and an archery exhibition.

According to the Councilor for Tourism, the purpose is to promote this cultural and tourist route, one of the oldest in Spain, which has its origin in the old Roman road Vía de la Plata and supports the communication from north to south of the peninsula. And this is precisely the objective of the Network of Cooperation of Cities in the Ruta de la Plata, of which the Zamora City Council has been an active part since its formal constitution more than 20 years ago, precisely in our city, integrating the main locations on your current route, from Seville to Gijón.
