European Championship finalist is on course for World Cup qualification, but conceded a late goal in Poland. Italy have an easy game and build on their record. Spain receives support from Greece.

FEuropean soccer champions Italy have further expanded their world record and are clearly on course for the World Cup. The Squadra Azzurra won against Lithuania 5-0 (4-0) on Wednesday and have now been unbeaten for 37 games. Since Switzerland dropped two points in the 0-0 in Northern Ireland, Italy’s lead has grown to six points. The Swiss have played two games less so far.

European Championship finalist England missed a giant step towards Qatar in Group I at the last minute. A goal by Damian Szymanski after work by Robert Lewandowski in stoppage time saved Poland a 1-1 (0-0) against the Three Lions, who had taken the lead through Harry Kane (72nd). With four points ahead of Albania and five points over Poland, England is still in good shape.

In group B, Spain received help from Greece. The 2004 European champions inflicted their first defeat on Sweden at 2-1 (0-0). Spain came to a 2-0 (1-0) in Kosovo and are now four points ahead of Sweden, who have two more games to play. Belgium celebrated their fifth win in their sixth game with a 1-0 (0-0) win in Belarus and remained first in Group E.
