Peter Vandenbempt: “Was television also on the course at VAR in Tubize?” | Jupiler Pro League

While the World Cycling Championships held the country in its grip, Peter Vandenbempt looked at the 9th match day in the Jupiler Pro League with a magnifying glass. Read or listen to our football commentator’s weekly analysis here.

Peter Vandenbempt in a nutshell:

  • “Anderlecht does not find his defensive stability, but was physically impressive.”
  • “In anticipation of a better game, Antwerp will take points. That is the difference with Anderlecht.”
  • “Standard has too little quality on the ball. It is crisis.”
  • “This weekend there were again phases in which I cannot follow our arbitration.”

“Anderlecht do not find its defensive stability”

Anderlecht have come back well in Ostend. They can be satisfied with that, because they were 2-0 behind and still had to play a whole half with one man less.

But if you ask me, it’s still two lost points. Anderlecht have created and missed so many opportunities. It is a painfully missed opportunity to play for the lead against Club Brugge on Sunday.

They’ve hit the bar and post – that’s bad luck – but there’s also that recurring lack of efficiency.

It is also a conclusion that Anderlecht are not able to regain their defensive stability from last year. That will take some time, Vincent Kompany once explained a few weeks ago. Anderlecht were vulnerable on counters and then you are suddenly 2-0 behind.

At the same time, I thought it was very strong what Anderlecht achieved with ten men in the 2nd half: dominant, the last line in the middle line, opportunities and Zirkzee was suddenly impressive again.

Anderlecht was also very strong physically. They just kept running, pushing and winning duels. But the reality is that they did not win against Ghent on Thursday and not against Ostend on Sunday. That way you don’t get all the way to the top and you keep putting yourself under pressure, even before Sunday’s match.

“In anticipation of a better game, Antwerp will take points”

Antwerp won a nice match at Union, but as Priske himself indicated, it was of course on a thief. Antwerp is now at the top, just below Club Brugge, but Priske cannot be satisfied with the performance.

If Union had taken advantage of his chances or goalkeeper Butez had been a little less good, Union just won at ease and is the deserved, proud leader this morning. Priske had also seen this in his honest and correct analysis.

He himself was especially disappointed that his defense was caught time and again by those Union players on the run. Defensively, it was a drama, Priske said.

It should of course be noted that there are a lot of absentees at the back of Antwerp. Out of necessity, he switched to a three-man defense. Priske has caused the turnaround with his substitutions – Antwerp has a broad core – with the class of Fischer and Benson. That is well managed from the trainer.

If you pick up points in anticipation of better play and some players who have to return, that’s a big plus.

12 to 12, that difficult month of August has already been forgotten. 6 out of 6 this week and actually twice the lesser team, also against Genk. Then you are on the trail of Club Brugge. That is the difference with Anderlecht.

“There is no quality on the ball at Standard”

It’s a crisis at Standard, I’m afraid. It’s very bad in every way. Venanzi’s search for fresh money for the club and for the stadium project was once again in the news.

It’s a tough quest that continues unabated, and it’s not an advertisement if you perform in this way. That is a kind of strangling uncertainty that causes unrest at the club.

On the field it goes from bad to worse, with now even a not illogical defeat against STVV. You can’t blame them for effort, but there’s no quality to the ball. Standard can’t decorate a chance. It barely kicks on goal or between the posts. Seven of the last nine goals have come from a standard situation. That was also the case against STVV.

Despite the support of the enthusiastic public, a 4 out of 15 on Sclessin: then everyone is under fire.

Peter Vandenbempt

There is also no individual level. You could say that the first and the last – goalkeeper Bodart and striker Klauss – are up to scratch, the rest swim too often, even players who we already know can do much better, such as Raskin or Bastien.

The newcomers Rafia and Peeters had a hopeful debut, but in the end they disappoint. Dønnum was going to be the big star, but that doesn’t really bring anything.

Despite the support of the enthusiastic public, a 4 out of 15 on Sclessin: then everyone is under fire. It is then said to get guys like Carcela or Lestienne from the B-squad, but they have disappointed so many times in the past. Are they going to do it now? I do not think so. Friday Standard has a move to KV Mechelen. I don’t have to draw it.

“Was the TV at the VAR in Tubize also on course?”

I have read that it has been ten years and Frank De Bleeckere since a Belgian whistled in the Champions League. So that’s good news for Lawrence Visser, who is doing well. That is individually a big and encouraging step forward.

But also this weekend there were moments and phases where I cannot follow our arbitration. I wonder whether the television at the VAR in Tubize was also on the course or afterwards on Vive le Vélo? I do not get it.

Seraing yesterday in Genk, Kortrijk on Saturday against Zulte Waregem: clearly wrong penalties against and yet the VAR does not respond. I do know that the bar is set high and that you don’t have to intervene at every stage. But this was so obvious, that’s strange to me.

We also continue to struggle with offside, which is a weekly phenomenon.

Peter Vandenbempt

We also continue to struggle with offside, which is a weekly phenomenon. To be clear, that’s not the referee’s fault, but the completely idiotic rules.

That amateurish 2D line that we have to use here, instead of a 3D line, as a result of which goals from Refaelov or Nieuwkoop were rejected, they could not draw the line there because their feet were in the air. Last week there was still the fuss about that disallowed goal from Ghent. That was then explained, it was correct according to regulations.

Now Eupen scores a goal after clearly offside in the phase, but apparently they had played the ball far enough backwards, creating a new phase. How far back does that have to be? That is interpretation and you should avoid that as much as possible.
