Ostapenko reaches quarter-finals of Luxembourg tennis tournament / Article

Latvia’s strongest tennis player Alona Ostapenko on Thursday won the second round game of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament in Luxembourg and entered the quarterfinals, according to the organizers. Alona must defend the title of champion in Luxembourg.

Ostapenko’s second victory in the tournament was secured in a three-set match 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 against Dutch tennis player Arianni Hartono, who started the tournament before qualifying and is in the world ranking at the end of the third century. Ostapenko closes third in the WTA rating published earlier this week.

Alona’s opponent (WTA 72) will be Alona’s opponent in the fight for the place in the semi-finals.

Alona’s advantage in the game against Hartono was reflected in the reception of the service, as well as the Latvian tennis player usually scored more points with her first service.

It has already been reported that in the first round, Ostapenko defeated another German Juli Niemier (WTA 133) who started the qualifying tournament. Alona triumphed in Luxembourg in 2019, but last year the tournament did not take place due to a pandemic.

Latvia’s second racket Anastasia Sevastova will not play in tournaments this week.

The tournament, with a prize pool of almost € 190,000, will be open until 19 September in Luxembourg. The winner will earn 280 rating points.
