Gordon was already serving his sixth suspension since 2013 and his fifth for violating the NFL banned substances policy. He was awarded this consequence in December 2019.

Gordon was first reinstated in December 2020 and took part in training for the last two weeks of the Seattle Seahawks season, before suffering a relapse.

The controversial but talented wide receiver first sent a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell in July asking to be reinstated again. The Players Association then gave him their support earlier in September.
