The St. Louis Cardinals held on, but it was tough against the New York Mets on Tuesday as they took the 11th inning victory by a score of 7-6.

Tyler O’Neill had allowed the Cards to come in the ninth inning with a 4-3 lead thanks to a long ball in the eighth inning. Javier Baez, however, provided the reply for the New Yorkers in the ninth with his 31st long ball of the campaign.

The Mets had the chance to score the winning run in the 10th inning, but Paul Goldschmidt orchestrated a great double play to end the inning.

Jake Reed was sent to the Mets’ mound in the 11th inning, but ran into trouble as the Cards scored three runs thanks to singles from Edmundo Sosa and Andrew Knizner.

Pete Alonso and Kevin Pillar closed the gap to just one point, but the Cards ended the game. This gain allows the Cards to take second place among the teams drafted in the National with a record of 75-69.

The Dodgers are playoffs

The defending World Series champions took their title defense one step further as the Los Angeles Dodgers secured their playoff ticket.

They beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 to at least make sure they were among the drafted teams.

Their 93-53 record means they are only edged in their division by the San Francisco Giants who are 94-50.

Trea Turner gave the Dodgers a lead in the opening round with his 30th double of the season. He followed up in the fifth round with a solo homerun. Max Muncy and Will Smith each hit the long ball in the Dodgers court.
