Invites to donate funds for the creation of a monument to hockey player Kārlis Skrastiņš – Hockey – Apollo.lv – Sports

On September 7, 2011, a plane crash in Russia killed representatives of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) team Yaroslavl “Lokomotiv”, including the legendary Latvian hockey defender Kārlis Skrastiņš (then 37 years old), who during his career was nicknamed “Iron Man” because he was on the field ready to go, even despite injuries. 44 people lost their lives in the accident.

“Let’s build a monument to Kārlis Skrastiņš” Iron Man “in Rīga. We invite you to donate everyone who is close to Kārlis in their hearts.

The Kārlis Skrastiņš Foundation was established on July 29, 2015 with the aim of bringing the memory of Kārlis Skrastiņš to Latvian society by erecting a monument dedicated to hockey.

The founders and board members of the foundation are Atis Skrastiņš (brother), hockey players Artūrs Irbe and Oskars Bārtulis, as well as Jānis Mednis (photographer and manager of various cultural and social projects). All members of the fund work on a voluntary basis without financial compensation.

There is an agreement between the municipality and the foundation “Kārlis Skrastiņa fonds” on the location of the monument – the object is planned in Riga, Kronvalda Park, Kalpaka Boulevard, in the section between Alunāna and Antonijas Street.
