There were reports of missing ballot boxes, lost keys, unsuspecting workers, long queues until after 6 p.m. In the end, the election officer resigned. And how did it go in Berlin-Reinickendorf? The current Tagesspiegel newsletter for Berlin-Reinickendorf asked Hauke Haverkamp, the deputy district returning officer, who had proven to be very well informed in response to all queries over the past few weeks.
Mr. Haverkamp, how many helpers did you use?
“We recruited 2430 volunteers and volunteers in advance.”
And how did it go overall?
“Election day went well overall in Reinickendorf. There were a few polling stations that reported long queues from 11 a.m. All polling stations that have registered have been provided with additional voting booths. “
Have ballots been missing somewhere?
“In very few cases, polling stations have requested ballot papers. These were delivered promptly and in sufficient quantities. “
Did the polling stations have to stay open longer because of the high number of people waiting?
“I have no precise knowledge of when polling stations are closed. Basically, however, all voters who have queued in front of the polling station until 6 p.m. are also allowed to vote. That is how long the polling stations have to stay open. I am not aware that the polling stations in Reinickendorf were open as long as in some other districts. “

“It is also our observation that it took a long time to fill out the ballot papers. It is noteworthy that the mood in the queues was usually very calm and not aggressive. “
One hears that in individual cases voters refused to wear a mask. Do you also have reports on this?
“There were only a few problems with masks, but these were more due to the fact that those who voted had forgotten the masks at home. The electoral boards were able to help out here, as the district electoral office naturally made sure that, in addition to hygiene and disinfectants, there were also additional masks for voters in every polling station. These were then gratefully accepted. “
Was there anything special to report from any of the polling stations?
“On special occasions I would like to mention an election worker in the district election office who went outside again and again during the day to hold her baby that the father brought over there and to spend some time with the baby. This sight and this commitment touched and motivated all employees very strongly. “
