FThis weekend there was two good news for Frankfurt as a football location: One related to Frankfurt Galaxy, the team that competes in the newly founded European League of Football (ELF), a professionalized European league. The other concerned Frankfurt Universe, the team in the German Football League (GFL), which represents the German Bundesliga in club football, so to speak. And even if the news couldn’t be more different, the joy about it should have been equally great in both camps.
Frankfurt Galaxy moved into the league final on Saturday with another impressive performance in the semi-finals of the ELF and will now play for the premiere title on September 26 in Düsseldorf (2.45 p.m. / ProSieben Maxx). Coach Thomas Kösling’s team won against the Cologne Centurions at 36: 6 in the local arena on Bornheimer Hang, after having recorded nine wins with only one defeat at the end of the main round. In the final, Frankfurt will now face the Hamburg Sea Devils, who beat the Wroclaw Panthers from Poland 30:27 in the second semi-final.
Frankfurt Universe, from whose last year’s GFL squad and coaching staff the Galaxy ELF team largely emerged, meanwhile, following a decision by the American Football Association Germany (AFVD), was able to rejoice in the GFL’s stay in the class.
On Saturday, the competition committee rejected the Allgäu Comets Kempten’s objection to the rating of the game at Universe, which meant that Frankfurt moved up from eighth place in the table to seventh place. The Comets unilaterally withdrew their participation in the game in July just hours before kick-off. This was then rated 20: 0 for Universe, which has now become final.
