“I started at the age of 9 on the Gulf court, I remember that they put some acrylic boards, and I took my first steps in basketball, we were also encouraged by Professor Segura from the school where I studied and since then I have not stopped. ”, He commented for EL SOL DE TAMPICO.

He quickly showed his skills for basketball, being considered for the municipal and state teams, to later be seen by the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, where he was given the opportunity to be preselected by the Mexican team.

“It was Ricardo Pontvianne who gave us the opportunity to be with Mexico, I already had professional experience with Leñadores de Durango, we went to test the Mexican Olympic Committee, the level of that team was quite good, and I knew in advance that it would not be easy. stay in the team, “said the former professional.

Later, Erick Martínez returned to his native Tampico, to put on the jacket of the historic Roadrunners of the UAT, who managed to make an incredible chemistry with the fans, precisely giving them joy with those memorable triumphs and especially the championships of the Mexican Basketball Circuit .

“That Roadrunner team made history with players like Lester Hood, Chango López, Michael Saulsberry, then Tino Chávez arrived, various people who came from the state of Jalisco; I also played in CIBACOPA with the Mazatlán team, there it was a professional league, which allowed the National League players not to stop, to continue in competition, and it was a great experience, ”said the coach today. During his time with the Mexican National Team, Erick Martínez was in different international tournaments, one in the mid-90’s, it was the pre-Olympic that was played in the United States, where he had the opportunity to meet the famous Dream Team of the Stars and Stripes , where was “His Majesty”, Michael Jordan.

“In that tournament, we played in a Nike brand facility, there were two groups, we did not have to face each other, however they organized a dinner where Mexico was invited and there we were able to meet and greet Scottie Pippen, Jhon Stockton, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, and after the event started, Michael Jordan arrived, it was something impressive to have him around, ”Erick Martínez responded.

Currently, the former professional player has an important challenge in his career as a coach, since he was appointed as coach of Petroleros de Ciudad Madero, a team that will be at the Pacific Basketball Circuit, which will start in the coming days, ensuring that it is a great test in his career, to try to boost local talent to professionalism.
