Euro de football 2020 (and 2021)dossier

In 2022, UEFA’s endowments will increase from € 8 million to € 16 million. Men’s competition peaks at 331 million.

The 2022 Women’s Football Euro will see its endowments doubled compared to the previous tournament in 2017, a sign of the continued growth of women’s football, the UEFA executive committee decided on Thursday.

The sixteen teams gathered in England for the final phase will share 16 million euros, against 8 million euros during Euro-2017 in the Netherlands, said the European body. By way of comparison, the 24 participants in the last men’s Euro, won by Italy, had split 331 million euros – an amount lowered by UEFA in early May due to limited ticket revenue by the pandemic.

This distribution, which will be detailed later, will provide for a minimum amount before having entered any point, then “Performance-based bonuses”.

Moreover and “for the first time”, UEFA will donate 4.5 million euros to clubs releasing their internationals “For their contribution to the success of the event”.

The development of women’s football is one of the indirect challenges of the overhaul of the men’s international calendar driven by Fifa, which advocates a World Cup every two years, alternating with continental tournaments. However, the final stages for men were until now confined to even years – excluding pandemic -, which avoided competing with those of women’s tournaments in odd years.
