DRD Athletes’ Board sets date for evaluating scholarship recipients | Others

The Board for the Development of the Full-Time High Performance Athlete will make a call to evaluate the recipients of the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD) program in 2021.

The secretary of the DRD, Ray Quiñones Vázquez, informed that by October 15 he must have the report of the 42 scholarship athletes to discuss it with the Full Time Athlete Board.

“Right now we are individually interviewing all the athletes who received scholarships. First we are doing the interviews with them, and then we will bring the ‘feedback’ (the feedback) and what they (the athletes) commented to start the evaluation ”, Quiñones Vázquez told THE SPOKESMAN.

“Really some will stay (in the scholarship program); others will lose their help. But the Board will say that because it is not in the hands of us or my staff. But we are in evaluation and the Board will evaluate it according to the interview that is being done to each one and the reports that they render ”, he added.

Quiñones Vázquez indicated that he has already interviewed several of the athletes, including Steven Yancy Piñeiro (skateboard), Adrián Gandía (judo), Luis Joel Castro Rivera and Rachelle De Orbeta (athletics).

The tenimesistas from utuadeñas Adriana Díaz and Melanie Díaz made the report through their father and coach, Bladimir Díaz, according to the official.

“He was Melanie and Adriana’s father because they were away. But we also want to personally interview them, ”said Quiñones Vázquez.

Scholarship athletes from the DRD high-performance program are from the sports of athletics, boxing, judo, swimming, diving, rowing, taekwondo, table tennis, archery, shooting, sailing, and women’s basketball team. In the group, there are adult athletes – Olympic and Paralympic – and youth.

In 2020, DRD spent a total of $ 64,500 in stipends and $ 179,000 in training expenses.
