Djokovic stays at US Open on grand slam course, but does have a scare

Novak Djokovic has made it to the eighth finals for the fourteenth time at the US Open. The Serbian number one in the world, who last came no further than the third round in New York in 2006, beat Kei Nishikori in four sets: 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, 6- 2.

Seven years ago, Nishikori reached his only grand slam final in New York, at the expense of Djokovic, which the Japanese tennis player lost. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Djokovic outclassed him in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-0), but the Serb now had a somewhat rough start.

Fast game

“He really surprised me today with his fast game,” said Djokovic, who lost a set for the second time this tournament. “After the first set it was 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, but it was only a few points that made the difference. I want to congratulate him on his good game.”

Djokovic repaired an early break, but was out of his mind in the tiebreak and that cost him the first set. He hardly had any problems after that and used his third match point.
