Negotiations have been underway for a few days, now it should be imminent: According to manager Altintop, Kuntz will be Turkey’s new coach in the coming days.

Stefan Kuntz will apparently soon be presented as the new national coach of Turkey. The performance will take place “in the next few days”, as manager Hamit Altintop said dpa explained.

The former U21 coach has “not yet” signed a contract, said Altintop. Kuntz was the preferred candidate from the start: “The discussions, including with the DFB, were all flawless and very, very fair.”

Turkey change: DFB unanimously approved Kuntz

The DFB had unanimously decided to dismiss Kuntz from his contract as U21 coach, which runs until 2023, should he be able to agree on a cooperation with Turkey. The 58-year-old had already announced last Friday that “there will be news soon”.

Under the direction of the native Saarlander, the German U21 team had recently reached the European Championship finals three times in a row and won the title twice. But after the disappointing performance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, speculation about the future of the successful coach has recently increased.

Kuntz leaves big footsteps at the DFB

In Turkey, qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be the most urgent order for Kuntz, who went hunting for goals at Besiktas in the 1995/96 season. In the Europe group G, Turkey ranks two points behind leaders Netherlands and Norway only in third place.

The DFB meanwhile has to think about a successor who can fill in the big footsteps of Kuntz. For the German U21s, the European Championship qualification against Israel continues on October 7th. Which coach will then sit on the bench is open.
