Giacomo Nizzolo will give up his European jersey on Sunday. The Italian is not on the start list, which does contain a lot of other roaring names and candidates. See here who is competing for the European title in Trentino.
Italians are eager for a new title
The European Championship for the pros was only created a few years ago, but the honors list only counts big names.
Peter Sagan, Matteo Trentin, Alexander Kristoff, Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo are the winners since 2016.
Nizzolo will not renew his title in any case. The Italian sprinter will ride the Tour of Great Britain this week and will be one of the spearheads of the Squadra for the World Cup in our country.
For their own people, the Italians are aiming for a 4th title – after Trentin, Viviani and Nizzolo – with Sonny Colbrelli (winner of the Benelux Tour), subscriber Trentin or Diego Ulissi. Also don’t lose sight of Gianni Moscon – régional de l’étape.
They are all Italians with a solid final shot, an asset that Remco Evenepoel as the Belgian leader does not have up his sleeve.
On the tough course in Italy, Dylan Teuns and Ben Hermans are especially cited as possible substitute leaders.
Sonny Colbrelli won the Benelux Tour last weekend.
Multiple options with the French, Mohoric forms a couple with Pogacar
The French have a very attractive team with Benoît Cosnefroy (in top form, see the Bretagne Classic), Romain Bardet (stage winner in the Vuelta) and Thibaut Pinot (who is slowly recovering his best legs).
The Spanish armada does not have a pronounced spearhead like Alejandro Valverde, the Dutch probably outplay Bauke Mollema.
While the Germans search fruitlessly for a sign, the Swiss can draw the card from Marc Hirschi and Gino Mäder, 5th in the Vuelta.
In the Portuguese camp it remains to be seen whether Joao Almeida still has his Polish legs available, the Slovenian selection then houses Matej Mohoric, who drove the stones out of the ground last week in the Benelux Tour.
Primoz Roglic sends his cat, Tadej Pogacar picks up the thread after the Tour and Tokyo apparently with difficulty.
Matej Mohoric, Colbrelli’s teammate in daily life, has wonderful legs.
And where are the Danes and the British?
If it does come to a sprint (from a thinned out group), Alexander Kristoff and Peter Sagan can take a shot at a second jersey.
You should never erase Zdenek Stybar and Mark Padoon, but when will the Danish selection be featured in this overview?
We hear you asking that question out loud, but the answer may be quite unexpected: the Danes are not taking part in the road race. The British are even looking the other way for the full European Championship.
