Bianca Andreescu braked by Maria Sakkari in New York

Bianca Andreescu fought quite a battle for Maria Sakkari before losing in three innings of 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (8/6), and 6-3 late Monday night in New York in the round of 16. US Open final.

The Greek, who is 18th in the WTA, took 3 hours 29 minutes to overcome the Ontarian, sixth seed and seventh player in the world.

Noticeably bothered by a pain in her left thigh in the third set, Andreescu continued to run all the balls as best she could, but Sakkari used her power to win.

She ended the debate with her fourth match point against the 2019 champion, who still hadn’t lost at Flushing Meadows since the start of her career.

In the quarterfinals, Sakkari will face the Czech Karolina Pliskova.

Fernandez s’incline en double

As Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez’s dream singles journey continues, the doubles’ one ended on Monday.

The 19-year-old and her teammate Erin Routliffe lost in three sets of 6-1, 4-6 and 6-2 to Romanians Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Monica Niculescu in the third round.

Gabriela Dabrowski, along with her teammate Luisa Stefani, is the only Canadian still in contention for the doubles title.

The fifth seed made up a delay to defeat Ukrainians Dayana Yastremska and Marta Kostyuk 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 and 6-2 and advance to the quarter-finals.

Fernandez will continue her singles journey on Tuesday against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
