Barrero’s hit in the ninth gives victory to Reds

José Barrero capitalized on an unexpected starting appearance on Friday and hit a double in the ninth inning that broke the tie and led the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 win over the Sana Luis Cardinals.

The 23-year-old Cuban hit two hours after being called from the Triple A branch in Louisville to take the place of infielder Kyle Farmer, who was placed on the paternity list. Barrero was hitting .167 in 14 games in the majors before Friday.

The two teams are in contention for the second berth to the playoffs as wild cards. The Reds came in a game behind the Padres for that walk, and the Cardinals started the night three games behind San Diego.

TJ McFarland (3-1) took the loss and Michael Lorenzen (1-2) was the winner.

For the Reds, Eugenio Suárez went 3-2 with a run scored and an produced.
