Barça: Koeman saved by his contract?

After the humiliation suffered by FC Barcelona against Bayern Munich (0-3) last Tuesday in the Champions League, Catalan coach Ronald Koeman was served an ultimatum of three games to redress the bar (see here). However, a dismissal from the Dutch technician does not seem to represent a real option at the moment. For the simple reason that an early separation would force the Catalan club, in great financial difficulty, to pay a considerable sum! According to Catalunya Radio, a sacking at this point in the season could effectively cost Barca up to € 14million.

While the Batavian’s contract ends next June, parting with him at the end of the year would not be without costs either! According to the same source, the 58-year-old man had indeed negotiated at the time of his arrival for compensation, arguing that he was leaving his post as coach of the Netherlands to join the Blaugrana. Under the “damage suffered” if it does not come back, Koeman would be entitled to claim 6 million euros from Barça! Despite results not living up to expectations and a fairly fresh relationship with President Joan Laporta, these revelations may explain why the Dutchman is so serene about his future (see brief 11:44).
