Argentinian Schwartzman and British Murray advance in ATP tennis tournament in San Diego

Argentine Diego Schwartzman and Scottish Andy Murray closed the day on Tuesday with victories at the ATP tennis tournament in San Diego, California.

Schwartzman, sixth seed, eliminated Italian Federico Gaio in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 27 minutes, to now face South African Lloyd Harris in the second round, who previously defeated local Christopher Eubanks 3-6 , 6-1, 6-4.

Most of the 29-year-old Argentine’s victories on the ATP circuit this year have come on outdoor hard courts with a 14-8 record.

The last and only time he had ended a season with more victories on outdoor hard courts was in 2019, when he enjoyed much success, including the US Open quarter-finals that year.

Schwartzman’s level of experience was the main factor in defeating the Italian and leading the personal top 1-0.

For his part, Scotsman Murray took a positive step in the Californian tournament by easily beating American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 10 minutes.

Murray thus advanced to the second round of the Californian event, where he will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud, second seed and who was free in the first round.

The Briton, currently 109 in the world ranking, had an effective first serve with which he managed to make 90% effective by just 60% his opponent, in addition to achieving nine aces with that service.

Murray, winner of three Grand Slam (Wimbledon, 2013 and 2016 and the US Open-2012) and two-time Olympic starter (London-2012 and Rio-2016), will face Ruud for the first time.
