More of 14,000 schoolchildren between 8 and 18 years old will participate in one of the 33 sports modalities, one more than last year after the incorporation of motorcycling, in the edition of the School Sports Games for the 2021-2022 academic year.

This has been announced this morning the vice president and counselor for Universities, Equality, Culture and Sports, Pablo Zuloaga, noting that this competition returns with force to return to the longed-for normality.

With this new edition, has indicated, the regional government assumes its responsibility to promote grassroots sport, both as an educational instrument and as a tool to promote values ​​such as equality, effort, respect for the adversary or the desire to improve.

Accompanied by the general director of Sport, Mario Iglesias, the vice president has highlighted that his department is already working in the configuration of the budgets for next year, which will include new investments that will favor the improvement of the facilities of the municipalities of Cantabria and lines of aid for the federations through subsidies.

During the presentation of this new edition of the School Sports Games, which has been attended by representatives of the Cantabrian federations Included in the sports program, the vice president has also focused on the effort and support of the families of the athletes, who visit Cantabria every weekend to participate in the different competitions.

The 33 sports modalities include chess, athletics, badminton, basketball, handball, baseball, bowling, boxing, cycling, soccer, gymnastics, golf, field hockey, indoor hockey, judo, karate, kick boxing, mountain climbing, motorcycling, swimming, orienteering, paddle tennis, skating and roller hockey, petanque, olympic rowing and fixed bench, rugby, surfing, taewkondo, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, sailing, volleyball and beach volleyball

These modalities, for both male and female, include the categories of youngest, juvenile, infantile, cadet and juvenile.

Caring for the quarry

For its part, Mario Iglesias has pointed out the importance of “taking care of the quarry” to maintain Cantabria as a reference in national and international sports, favoring an egalitarian, inclusive sports practice and without leaving anyone behind.

As news for this new edition 2021-2022, the General Director of Sport has announced the incorporation of two new lines of subsidies for the promotion of school sports.

On the one hand, He has referred to the direct granting of subsidies to the sports federations of Cantabria for the organization and conducting championships in Spain at school age. Iglesias has valued the organization of these events, in addition to being a sporting activity in itself, as a tourist and economic engine for the municipalities.

And, on the other, to the granting of public subsidies, under a competitive competition regime, to sports clubs in Cantabria for travel expenses to national competitions at school age.

Mario Iglesias has indicated that these lines of subsidies are in addition to the existing financial support measures, such as the transport service during non-school hours and the direct granting of subsidies to the sports federations of Cantabria to participate in the Spanish Championships for athletes of school age.
