The surprise of the day for Mexican athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was the elimination of Aida Román in the 16th of the individual women’s archery, where her British opponent gave an impressive score.

Bryony Pitman took the lead in the first set with a score of 28-27, but Aida Roman closed the competition with a second set 25-23; the British tiebreaker had a score of 25 against 24; And when they played everything for everything, Roman hit a 3.

The last set he took, then, Pitman, with a score of 27 against 21, to finally have a total of 6 points for her, and two for Aída Román.

During their previous encounter, against Rihab Elwalid, Tunisian opponent, Aída Román obtained six points, four above the other competitor.

During her first set, the Mexican lost 29 to 27; during the second round, he won 23-22; in the third he made 28 points out of a total of 26, while for the fourth and last turn he made 23 points to win definitively.

Alejandra Valencia continues in the fight, when she faces Karyna Kazlouskaya of Belarus in the 32nd; Meanwhile, the Mexican Ana Paula Vázquez will face the Brazilian Ane Marcelle dos Santos.

In an exciting match for third place in archery, mixed mode, the Mexican team made up of Alejandra Valencia and Luis “The grandfather” Álvarez got the bronze medal. In that way the Mexican delegation got their first metal during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

After falling against the South Korean team, the rival to beat was the representative of Turkey composed of Mete Gazoz and Yasemin Ecem Anagoz. The start of the competition was favorable for Mexico, after the Turks achieved 34 points. The rivals, with a quatrain of nines, they finished the set with 36 points in total.

The second set represented a pothole for mexicans. With a good sense, the Turks put the national duo against the ropes with 9 and 8 points. The picture got complicated when Alejandra Valencia added eight, but a slip of the aim Grandfather fell to the penultimate circle and added two points. In the end, Gazoz and Anagoz took the chapter with 36 units against 27.

The third round was that of vindication. With the weight of being considered part of the select elite group in archery, the Mexicans started with a couple of perfect shots. With nine and ten points they finished with the 39 mark and surpassed their opponents with three units.

The 33 points of Turkey were not enough to surpass the 34 of Álvarez and Valencia. Thus, Mexico got the first medal of the competition and the medal table was inaugurated with a bronze.

The long embrace between Alejandra Valencia and Luis “El abuelo” Álvarez, at the end of the competition, it represented the arduous trajectory of the historic achievement. Despite having consolidated the third place, Mexico went down in history as the country to receive the first medal in the mixed modality of the discipline.
