The Tokyo 2020 Games, the least watched in history in Spain

Tokyo 2020 loses share. The last Olympic Games, ended yesterday after two weeks of competition, they have had a historical minimum following through television in Spain, with an average of 14.6% of share, 4.5 percentage points less than the previous lowest figure, that of Rio 2016, according to a report by Geca through the data of Kantar Media.

Of that 14.6% of the total, the channel where the Olympic event was followed the most was La 1 de Radio Televisión Española (Rtve), with 10.9% of the total of the share. Followed by the Teledeporte channel, which accounted for 3.1% of the total. The Eurosport and Eurosport 2 issues closed, with 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively.

The maximum historical monitoring of the Olympic Games on television is 29 years ago, with the Barcelona 1992 Games, which had an average of 52.1% of share, distributed in practically proportional parts between the two public channels at that time: La 1 and La 2.

Even so, the Tokyo 2020 event has caused a 52% increase in the share of the channels on which the events have been broadcast, compared to the same period in 2020, original date on which the Olympics were to be held.

In the public-themed channels, the sports that have been followed the most have been basketball, athletics and soccer, the soccer final between Spain and Brazil taking the highest peak, with 18.6% of share, the best daily data since December 2019.

On the other hand, in Eurosport, the medals of Ana Peleteiro and Ray Zapata were the most watched events of the chain in Spain, reaching 1.8% of share. Precisely, on pay television, there has been a greater variety within the most watched sports, with badminton, wrestling or artistic gymnastics among the most watched broadcasts.
