The government could be asked for 300 thousand euros for the hockey team to participate in the Beijing Games

On Friday, the Latvian National Sports Council reviewed applications for financial support from several sports organizations, LETA was informed by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES).

Considering the issue of additional funding needed to ensure the operation of the Latvian Olympic team, as well as to prepare athletes and teams for participation in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, the Council decided to invite the Cabinet to transfer MES funding not exceeding 871,700 euros to the Latvian Olympic Committee. – of which up to 261,700 euros for the operation of the Latvian Olympic team, up to 260,000 euros for the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation, up to 210,000 euros for the Latvian Luge Sports Federation, up to 70,000 euros for the Latvian Biathlon Federation, up to 50,000 euros for the Latvian Ski Federation and up to 20 000 euros to the Latvian Skating Association.

In turn, if the Latvian men’s hockey team qualifies for the 2022 Beijing Olympics, the government will be asked to provide funding of up to 300,000 euros to cover the costs of the Latvian Hockey Federation’s preparation and participation, including player insurance.

Also considering the financial request of the Latvian Paralympic Committee for the preparation of athletes for participation in the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing, the Council decided to invite the Cabinet of Ministers to allocate funding not exceeding 35,000 euros.

The meeting of the Council examined the information provided by the national sports bases managed by the Ministry of Education and Science – bobsleigh and toboggan track “Sigulda”, Culture and Sports Center “Daugava Stadium”, Sports Center “Mežaparks” and Tennis Center “Lielupe” in order to The security measures put in place to contain the 19 pandemics would stabilize the financial situation of these sports corporations. For this purpose, the Sports Council decided to call on the government to allocate approximately 449,025 euros to the Ministry of Education and Science.

The Sports Council also decided to invite additional funds of up to 33,000 euros to ensure the participation of the Olympic champion – 3×3 basketball team athletes in international sports competitions.

At the same time, the Sports Council decided to support the granting of the status of a national sports base to the sports base “RUUKKI Beach Center”. The final decision on this issue will be made by the Cabinet of Ministers.

It has already been reported that at this meeting the Latvian National Sports Council supported the application of the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) to run for the organization of the 2025 European Men’s Basketball Championship final tournament group and playoffs in Latvia.
